Custom Application Development

Overview

Acmeware provides custom application development that leverages information in the MEDITECH Data Repository (DR) to construct niche Web and PC-based applications that meet specific departmental or management objectives.  Easy access to healthcare information system data in the DR and powerful tools for integrating third party data provide the foundation on which custom applications are developed.  Acmeware employs prevailing application development technologies from Microsoft to produce well-designed, intuitive, cost-effective solutions.

Project Specification

Acmeware recognizes that critical to the successful design, development, and deployment of a custom application is a thoroughly vetted functional specification document. Our consultant specialists have extensive experience drafting application specifications.  This experience helps identify potential issues and clarify ambiguity before application development begins. As a result, projects are completed on time and on budget and applications perform as designed and anticipated.

Technology

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 is the preferred interactive development environment used by Acmeware.  Visual Studio’s tight integration with the Microsoft SQL Server Relational Database on which the DR is implemented insures that the broadest functionality is available during application development.  Acmeware employs the Visual Studio’s Web Developer component to rapidly design and develop Web-based DR application solutions with minimal coding and correspondingly minimal costs. Acmeware also recognizes that the ubiquitous Microsoft Access application can be used to produce low-cost solutions when application deployment on a specific PC desktop is satisfactory.

Example #1 - Contract Management System

Contract management system

Acmeware was tasked to develop a custom Contract Management System for a client using the DR to extract vendor information from the Materials Management module. The application allows for the collection of additional data related to a vendor and a specific contract. Also integrated into this Microsoft Access application is the ability to link directly to U.S. Government web sites to determine the status of specific vendors with regard to government reimbursement programs. The application also provides a litany of reports to track vendor contract status and action requirements.

Example #2 Downtime Registration System

Downtime registration screen

Acmeware developed a Web-based application that allows access to the DR demographic recall data, facilitating patient registrations during planned or unplanned downtime. The application was designed to replicate the client’s MAGIC Inpatient Long Form registration routine resulting in ease of use and minimal training requirements. Registration information entered into this application during downtime is seamlessly scripted back into the live registration routines once the system is back on line.

Summary

Custom application development need not be exorbitantly expensive when many of the tools necessary to perform this development are already readily available to a hospital or healthcare system. The potential for incorporating the DR into custom designed applications solutions is boundless. Knowledge of the DR data structures and rapid application development technologies are the ingredients necessary for successful specification, development, and deployment of custom DR-based applications. Acmeware’s steadfast focus on developing DR-based applications has allowed us to be at the forefront of delivering cost-effective, innovative custom application solutions to our clients.
